Ekaterinburg is the third largest Russian city, administrative center of Sverdlovsk region and the capital of the Ural Federal District.
Ekaterinburg can be easily found on the geographical map of the vast Euro-Asian Continent: it is in the middle of the Ural Mountains, which separate Europe and Asia. Thus, Ekaterinburg lies at the crossroads of 2 continents.

It was nearly three hundred years ago when this town was founded on the eastern slopes of the Ural mountains on the banks of the beautiful Iset river.
Ekaterinburg is the capital of the Ural Federal District, which covers an area of about 2 million sq. km. The territory possesses the main oil and gas fields in Russia, and the richest deposits of iron and polymetallic ores. The world largest metallurgical enterprises are located in the Urals, concentrating here due to the great industrial and intellectual potential.
Ural Federal District occupies about 11% of territory of Russia, having 8,5% of population of Russia. Ural Federal District produces 16% of gross product of country, 21% of industrial production.

The dynamics of contemporary life does have its effect on the city. Today Ekaterinburg is a city with the population of a million and a half and a powerful industrial and research centre. Its heavy transport and chemical engineering plants, non-ferrous metallurgical works and military industrial enterprises occupy a leading place in the national economy. The city has about 15 institutions of higher education; it is the seat of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Ekaterinburg is a major business centre in Russia. Its financial and banking institutions take an active part in russian economy, making a substantial contribution to the development of cooperation with foreign countries. Ekaterinburg's unique geographical position on the border of Europe and Asia offers broad opportunities for assuming the role of an important centre of cooperation between East and West. More and more foreign companies are successfully operating representative offices and joint ventures here.
The daily life of the city is provided by its social infrastructure. Its numerous shops, public catering facilities, trams, trolley-buses, buses, and "Metro" render services to its residents and visitors. The city has dozens of public libraries, cinemas, concert halls, children's music and art schools. Its Opera House, Drama Theatre, Musical Comedy Theatre, Theatre of Youth, Puppet Shows Theatre, Philharmonic Society, and Circus are well known in the country. The museums of Ekaterinburg are famous for their unique collections.
Ekaterinburg is the most urbanized part of Russia today. The cooperation between the different economic sectors of the region was put into shape throughout the long historical period. It’s the transnational region known for its self-sufficiency and advantages in respect to the international economic competition. Ekaterinburg presently holds the second place when it comes to investment activity, Moscow is on top of the list.
Ekaterinburg’s Development Projects
1. The Big Eurasian State University (BESU)

BESU is a long-term project of integration of science, education and industry. Today, Ekaterinburg has 5 large state universities, well-known in Russia and abroad. The main goal of BESU is to integrate these universities. |
Big Eurasian State University (BESU) integration project has been developed since 2000.
Parties benefitting from the project are:
- the intellectual elite of Euro-Asiatic continent
- younger population of the regions
- Ural federal district
- Sverdlovskaya region with the city of Ekaterinburg
- national and transnational economy
With concentration of resources in the areas of innovative growth, substantial shifts in development of the new born economy of Russia can be achieved. For the participating schools, BESU creation opens opportunities for an array of internal system transformations. These institutions will join the University as separate legal entities, although, utilizing unified logos, names and educational standards.
The initial plan was based only on relocation of all schools to one central location. This was intended for consolidation of intellectual resources and giving an additional impulse to development of higher education schools and applied sciences.
2. International Transport and Logistical centre

Today Ekaterinburg is a part of International Transport Line: Berlin – Warsaw – Moscow – Nizhniy Novgorod – Ekaterinburg. As a result of globalization and economic development our country is need in transport and logistic system improvement. The project “International Transport and Logistical centre” of Ekaterinburg is directed to it. |
One of the Ekaterinburg’s perspectives is to create all conditions for achievement of economic effectiveness of different transport systems. Service of international, national, regional and local trade transportation and transportation of passengers through Ekaterinburg’s transport and logistical centre is object of city development.
